Review: Troilus and Cressida, Barbican Theatre, London
One of Shakespeare's most difficult plays, "Troilus and Cressida" is also his most modern, given its preoccupation with talking about war rather than actual combat. In the dying days of the Trojan War, the Greek and Trojan camps send messages back and forth negotiating a mano-a-mano showdown. There's lots of cynical bargaining and decadent lolling about, to which the titular love match is really only a sideline. Cheek by Jowl's self-consciously stylized approach underlines the play's atmosphere of lazy excess, but does so via a series of choices that slow down the action and undermine the company's ability to compel audiences' attention.

Review: Amadeus in New Jersey
Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey shifts into high gear with a richly textured production of Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus." Sumptuously mounted and staged, the 1979 courtly thriller is acted with compelling force, and the inclusion of snatches of Mozart's music offers a hint of the composer's extraordinary legacy, especially a few glorious strains from the Requiem Mass. Director Joe Discher accents the play's devilish humor, creating a keen balance between the giddy palace antics and the tragic dissipation of a genius.

Review: Jersey Boys in Las Vegas
The Vegas edition of "Jersey Boys" displays a pure and propulsive rock 'n' roll spirit that has been less apparent in other incarnations. The production, especially the briskly paced first act, is big, loud and contagious thanks to snappy direction and a potent lead quartet portraying the Four Seasons. A rare songbook musical with a dramatic biography attached, this is the zippiest of all the Broadway transfers to the Strip and may well be the strongest exception to the rule that Vegas visitors cannot be kept captive for more than 90 minutes.
